jpnn.com – JAKARTA – Maarten Paes performed brilliantly when the Indonesian National Team held the Saudi Arabian National Team to a 1-1 draw in the 2026 World Cup Qualification match in the Asian zone, Friday morning WIB.
PSSI General Chairman Erick Thohir said that Maarten Paes’ presence under the goalpost could stabilize the Indonesian National Team’s defense line.
Erick, who admitted that he was actually reluctant to give praise to individual players, felt he had to express his appreciation to Maarten Paes.
According to him, the main goalkeeper of the FC Dallas club in Major League Soccer (MLS) performed well when the Indonesian National Team held Saudi Arabia, which is ranked 56th in FIFA, to a draw.
Despite making a blunder with a foul in the penalty box, Maarten Paes was able to block the opponent’s execution from the 12-yard spot.
After that, the 26-year-old footballer was able to ward off two dangerous attempts by Saudi Arabia, including when he was one-on-one with opposing player Feras Albrikan.
“Maarten Paes is needed for team stability, especially when facing opponents ranked around 50th in FIFA,” said Erick in Jakarta, Friday (6/9).
