(ANSA) – FLORENCE, JULY 29 – A psychiatrist and a nurse were held captive for 45 minutes after being threatened by a patient with a screwdriver and a knife. It happened Friday morning at the new outpatient clinic of the Montedomini mental health center. The news was reported in yesterday’s edition of Corriere Fiorentino.
What scared the two women even more than the knife and screwdriver was the fact that the man, the newspaper reports, had a canister with him. Maybe with gasoline in it? The doubt shocked the two health workers for those 45 minutes. After the threats, the man suddenly left. The incident was reported to the police.
“The attacks perpetrated against all healthcare personnel are no longer sustainable and require urgent protective intervention. Does it take another murder to understand that we must do something?”, said the president of the Order of Physicians of Florence, Pietro Dattolo. “A little over a year after the murder of psychiatrist Barbara Capovani, at Santa Chiara in Pisa, history has risked repeating itself. The Montedomini attack is, moreover, only one of the approximately one thousand attacks that doctors, nurses, social workers, social workers, educators and all the other figures who work in our sector, suffer every year. It is no longer acceptable to continue like this. The thought of going to work to assist others and risking not returning home is unacceptable”, continued Dattolo.
“We have been saying it for a long time and we reiterate it again: to counteract this dangerous trend, institutions need to support all those involved in awareness and prevention programs. The turning point that must be made is cultural. It is a matter of collective awareness. It is not possible for medical personnel to be abandoned in the face of these dangers: the right to care and the right to safety are inseparable”, concluded the president of the Order. (ANSA).
