The psychologist Sergio García Soriano offers us the second installment of his “Psychology of Everyday Life”, in which he presents several examples of micromachismos.

Sergio García Soriano chooses micromachismos to present us with a new chapter of his series of content for EFEsalud on “Psychology of everyday life.”

All of us use “mental shortcuts” to think, biases. Science pretends to be impartial but it is reduced to the scientific field and advances via “errors.”

When we give our opinion or in everyday life, we do not usually use scientific concepts, we use ideology, a set of beliefs about how the world should be or how we believe it is.

Micromachismos are related to stereotypical ways of relating to women. They are a subtle way of showing “sexist” attitudes and behaviors.

Micromachismos, some examples

We tend to be more affectionate with girls than with boys and use more sentimental language with them than with boys. The crying of a girl is more tolerated than that of a boy. When fathers perform their role, they are called “fathers” because it is assumed that they are making an extra effort to care for the baby. However, with mothers we assume that it is their responsibility to raise children. If a heterosexual couple goes to a restaurant and orders wine, it is more likely that they will be the one the waiter addresses for the selection and the first tasting. Also the bill and the payment are usually assumed to be the one who will take charge. On a sidewalk, if a man and a woman are walking, it is more likely that they will tend to occupy the space closer to the center and they will occupy the space closer to the wall. It is a stronghold of protection. At the same age, teenage sons and daughters have different norms with the same parents. In them, greater strength and personal autonomy are assumed. In them, their sexual honor is taken care of and they are afraid for them, lest they be deceived or raped. When they have children, they consider stopping working or combining both facets. They do not usually consider stopping work.

It is not easy to completely eradicate micromachismos or eliminate them. However, we can recognize them so we can not be guided by them.

When we know that they can occur in each of us, we can avoid suffering from them automatically and, therefore, redirect our way of seeing daily life in this sense.
