Some cognitive abilities are essential to make us human, but these abilities have not appeared from nowhere, nor overnight: they come from a long evolution from our ancestors to us. Because? Did it have any survival advantage for our ancestors to have the ability to do mathematics and understand symbols? If so, it must also be true that species of primates more primitive than ours also possess these capacities. Researchers from Harvard and Yale Universities are addressing the study of these problems in Rhesus macaque monkeys.
