jpnn.comJAKARTA – Executive Director of the Indonesian Public Institute (IPI) Karyono Wibowo highlighted various things after the Constitutional Court (MK) abolished the Presidential Threshold (PT) nomination threshold rules for President of the Republic of Indonesia.

Karyono said that the Constitutional Court’s decision to remove the PT provisions could present many candidates in the presidential election which could potentially burden the budget.

“With so many presidential candidates, the election costs will certainly increase,” he said via messaging service, Sunday (5/1).

According to Karyono, the large number of candidates in the presidential election gives rise to the potential for contestation to be held in two rounds as stated in Article 159 Paragraph 1 of Law Number 42 of 2008 concerning Elections.

“The potential for a two-round presidential election is very large if the requirements for selected candidates do not change,” he said.

Karyono also said that the Constitutional Court’s decision to abolish the PT provisions increased the burden on election organizers.

“If it is not anticipated, it will lead to tragedies like what happened in the 2019 election, many victims died of illness due to exhaustion,” he continued.

The problem in the election is actually about unconstitutional ways of achieving victory with a transactional political culture that justifies any means.
