As the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) executive elections were held in Delhi today (December 10), he was declared unopposed for the top post in the polls. The election was conducted under the supervision of Supreme Court-appointed retired judge L Nageswara Rao.
The Indian Olympic Association elections were originally scheduled to be held in December 2021. However, there was difficulty in conducting the election due to the persistent back-and-forth of some administrators. Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has warned of a possible suspension if elections are not held this month.
After this, India’s golden monkey PT said that he is going to contest this election. Usha made her wish known on October 26. Also, at the end of last month, he filed his candidacy as a separate candidate for the top post.
Earlier, no one was ready to fight against Usha, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in July. Usha, fondly known as the ‘Bayoli Express’, is seen as the candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which nominated him as a member of the Rajya Sabha in July.
In this situation, PT Usha has been selected as the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association.
Usha, 58, has won 11 medals, including 4 gold, at the Asian Games between 1982 and 1994. At the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, he won 4 gold medals in 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and 4 x 400m relay. Besides, he also won silver medal in 100 meters race. He finished 4th in the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Olympics.
He is also the first Olympian to head the Indian Olympic Association and the first international medalist in its 95-year history. After two decades of dominating Indian and Asian athletics, he carved a new mark before retiring in 2000 with a host of international medals.
Usha was the first sportsperson to represent the country since Maharaja Yadavinder Singh, who played in a Test match in 1934. Singh is the third Indian Olympic Association president. He held office from 1938 to 1960.
