Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has said that the party-backed independent candidates who won the elections held on February 8 will join the Sunni Ittehad Council. According to Pakistani law, independent candidates who win the elections are required to join a party within three days of the notification of the results. That is why PTI leaders have taken this decision.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan said on Monday that our candidates in the National Assembly, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies are going to join the Sunni Ittehad Council. The Sunni Ittehad Council is a coalition of Islamic political and religious parties representing followers of the sect of Sunni Islam. PTI-backed independent candidates have won maximum seats in Parliament but have not got a chance to form the government. After the election results, a situation of hung parliament has arisen in the country.

PTI will remain in opposition

Independent candidates supported by Imran Khan’s PTI party have won 93 seats in the National Assembly. PML-N won 75 seats and PPP won 54 seats. To form the government in Pakistan, a party must win 133 seats in the 266-member National Assembly. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have announced that they will form a coalition government following the results of the February 8 elections. The post-poll alliance between PML-N and PPP means that PTI will not be able to form the next federal government. PTI leaders have announced that they will sit in the opposition.

Imran Khan’s party has alleged that both the rival parties are trying to change the mandate. PTI leaders’ allegations got a boost on Saturday when a senior government official in charge of the election process in Rawalpindi alleged that the election was rigged. PTI has also demanded a judicial inquiry into the allegations of vote rigging and manipulation of election results. PTI leaders say that many of its candidates have been defeated by rigging.
