Stray Kitten with Rabies Found in Douglas County, Ten People Possibly Exposed

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) has issued a warning urging the public to exercise caution and be vigilant around stray animals following the discovery of a stray kitten with rabies.

According to DCHD, ten individuals may have been exposed to the infected kitten and have already commenced necessary treatment. Preliminary investigations reveal that the kitten is estimated to be between one to two months old. Disturbingly, laboratory testing confirmed it to be carrying a raccoon variant of rabies, a strain typically not found west of the Appalachian mountain range.

In light of this concerning incident, the DCHD is urging anyone who encounters domestic or wild animals displaying unusual behavior to immediately contact the Nebraska Humane Society at (402) 444-7800, Ext. 1. Promptly reporting any suspicious animal activity can mitigate the risk of further spreading the disease.

Furthermore, the DCHD emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all pets receive up-to-date vaccinations. Vaccinating pets against rabies not only safeguards their health but also reduces the likelihood of transmission to humans or other animals.

Rabies is a viral infection primarily transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. It affects the central nervous system and is often fatal if left untreated. Symptoms can include fever, headache, agitation, hallucinations, and difficulty swallowing.

The Douglas County Health Department is collaborating with local authorities and animal control agencies to monitor the situation and implement necessary measures to prevent the spread of rabies. They are also conducting a thorough investigation to determine any potential sources of exposure and identify additional individuals who may have come into contact with the infected kitten.

As this incident highlights the importance of being cautious around stray animals, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets. Regularly monitoring the behavior of pets and reporting any signs of illness or unusual behavior can help in early detection and proper management of such cases.

Concerned residents are urged to stay updated on the latest news and information regarding the situation. The Douglas County Health Department will continue to work diligently to address this public health concern and ensure the safety of the community.
