Chennai: While it has been announced that the state government will pay the tuition fees for government school students joining IITs and IIMs, the higher education department has issued guidelines for the same.

Tamil Nadu Higher Education Secretary Tha Karthikeyan issued an order in this regard:

In order to encourage enrollment of government school students in Central Institutes of Higher Education like IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, the State Government will bear the entire cost of undergraduate education in these institutions. Guidelines for this are currently being issued.

Accordingly, only students who have studied in government schools from 6th to 12th standard can benefit from this scheme. Students who have got admission in Central educational institutes including IITs should apply in their District Collector’s office along with the relevant documents. The Collector shall verify the same and recommend the details of the total expenditure for the student to the Directorate of Technical Education. The directorate should send a proposal to the government after examining it and seeking appropriate allocation of funds.

In this matter, regardless of caste, income, student profile, after considering the recommendations of District Collector and Directorate of Technical Education, in the first year itself, the government will give administrative approval for the expenditure amount for 4 years and issue an order. The Commissioner of Technical Education can release the funds to the student after receiving the proposal from the Collectors for the subsequent years.

Students who want to benefit from this scheme must submit documents including school headmaster’s certificate, Tamilnadu location certificate, higher education admission order, all fee details of the educational institution as proof of having studied in government schools from 6th to 12th standard. This is stated in the decree.
