Until the very end, she took an active part in the work of the Kiepenheuer-Theater-Verlag: Now the publisher Maria Müller-Sommer has died.

Berlin.

Stage publisher Maria Müller-Sommer died on Sunday at the age of 101. This was announced by Gustav Kiepenheuer Bühnenvertriebs-GmbH in Berlin. Maria Müller-Sommer was the senior manager and shareholder of the publishing house. She has published works by Günter Grass, George Tabori, Christa and Gerhard Wolf, among others. The Association of German Stage and Media Publishers (VDB) calls her “one of the great publisher personalities of our time”. She has significantly shaped the theater and media world for decades.

“We are happy that we had her with us under the umbrella of the publishing house until the end and were able to take care of her and let us share in her wisdom,” the publisher’s obituary said. “She was a rock in the surf for us – even in uncertain times. She was – as Peter von Becker wrote on the occasion of her 100th birthday – “the spirit of the century”.

After completing her doctorate in theater studies, newspaper studies and art history, Maria Sommer started her career in 1946 as a dramaturge at Kiepenheuer Bühnenvertrieb, according to the VDB. “A few years later, she bought the shares in the company and built up the publishing house with a clear idea of programming and a sense of what could be interesting for theater people and audiences,” says the association.

Gustav Kiepenheuer Bühnenvertriebs-GmbH is based in Berlin-Dahlem. Founded in 1931, the company publishes plays, screenplays and radio plays and represents their authors to broadcasters, film and television production companies and stage companies. (dpa)
