The Puducherry government’s power department has announced new guidelines for obtaining subsidies for the installation of solar power panels in homes. Puducherry, a state that procures power from other states and the central pool, has a current electricity demand of 585.81 MW, with an average daily power of 520 MW coming from the Central Synthesis.
The government plans to increase solar power generation in homes to 5 MW by 2026, in an effort to reduce pollution and environmental harm. The new guidelines will change the way subsidies are issued for rooftop solar power generation, aiming to encourage more households to adopt solar energy.
Previously, solar panels were installed on homes by contractors through the Renewable Energy Agency, and subsidies were paid directly to the contractors. Under the new guidelines, homeowners will apply directly on the portal of the Ministry of Renewable Energy, and the subsidy will be paid directly to the consumer’s bank account.
The power department has also listed the work of selecting 18 companies who will install solar equipment on the floors of houses and set up power stations. Residents can choose one of these companies to implement a home solar power generation project.
Under the Household Solar Power Scheme, a subsidy of Rs 14,588 per kilowatt will be provided for solar power generation from 1 kilowatt to 3 kilowatts, and Rs 7,294 per kilowatt for solar power generation between 3 kilowatts and 10 kilowatts. The government also mentioned that the amount invested in the solar power generation project can be withdrawn in three years and that residents interested in the project can contact the power department.
These measures aim to increase solar power generation and reduce the burden on the traditional power supply in Puducherry, while encouraging sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions.
