Puebla Group Attacks Ecuador Government – Italy-World

(ANSA) – QUITO, SEPTEMBER 13 – The Puebla Group, which brings together Latin American left-wing leaders, denounced the Ecuadorian government’s decision to prevent the entry of an international delegation that wanted to make a ‘humanitarian visit’ to Rafael Correa’s former vice president (2007-2017), who is being held in the maximum security prison of La Roca after being detained during the assault on the Mexican embassy on April 5. “We hold Daniel Noboa’s government, especially the Interior Minister, Mónica Palencia, and the Foreign Minister, María Gabriela Sommerfeld, directly responsible for the life and any harm that Jorge Glas may suffer during his imprisonment,” said the Puebla Group, which says Glas is a political persecuted person. Glass entered the Mexican embassy after a judge requested his arrest for embezzlement in reconstruction work after the 2016 earthquake. He also had to finish serving an eight-year prison sentence for two corruption convictions in 2017 and 2020 for which he had already served five years in prison. After Ecuadorian police invaded the Mexican embassy in Quito to detain Glass, Mexico and Ecuador accused each other of violating international conventions and standards at the International Court of Justice. The Puebla Group asked Ecuador for a “safe conduct” so that the former vice president could benefit from asylum granted by Mexico. (ANSA).
