Puerto Rico will have a new years eve in the dark for a massive blackout that has affected more than 1.3 million inhabitants on the island.
The rest of the territory United States prepares to receive New Year 2025, while in Puerto Rico they will spend it in the dark.
According to a social media post from the company LUMA Energythe main operator and distributor of electrical energy on the island, the massive blackout began at 5:30 am why is December 31.

LUMA Energy estimates that more than 1.3 million customers do not have electricity service.
The company reported that according to the preliminary information it has, the blackout is due to a “fault in an underground line. The cause of the failure continues to be investigated.”
The work to restore power to the inhabitants began and at the moment there are 73 thousand customers with the electrical service, but the rest would have to wait one or two days.
The above according to what was communicated to local media indicating that “the complete process will take between 24 and 48 hoursif conditions permit.”
At the outset, the regions most affected by the massive blackout are in Bayamon (which has 32 percent of service restored from 207 thousand 253 customers), Saint John y Ponce.
Puerto Rico’s electrical grid deteriorated
While it is true that this type of blackouts in Puerto Rico are unusual, some local media have reported that the electrical network has received little maintenance and was more affected after the passage of the Hurricane Maria -of category 4– in 2017.

Currently it depends on the electricity supply from the generators of the Federal Emergency Management Agency of USA.
