Could you imagine a Pulp Fiction without Uma Thurman? Of course, perhaps the film that consecrated Quentin Tarantino would have ended up proving to be a masterpiece anyway, but how strange it would be to find Mia Wallace with a different face! The risk, however, was real: our Uma was in fact intending to refuse her role.
The future Kill Bill star was in fact Tarantino’s first choice for the film that would have saved Bruce Willis’ career, but Thurman he wasn’t at all enthusiastic about the idea: the actress, to be honest, had already firmly refused the role when the director who had already made his debut with Reservoir Dogs managed the masterstroke of convincing her to change her mind.
How did he do it? The answer is simple: with a lot of persuasion and a script that would have left anyone speechless. The good Quentin, who in no way intended to give up the idea of hiring the one who would become his muse, actually went so far as to read the script to Thurman during a phone call: it turned out to be so convincing that we had no choice but to retrace our steps.
