(Reuters) – A windstorm, accompanied by heavy rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul throughout the week, damaged part of the roof of warehouses where CMPC Brasil, part of the CMPC group, keeps cellulose for export, in the city of Rio Large, causing a loss “still to be assessed”, the company said in a note to Reuters this Friday.

The company said that its industrial unit located in Guaíba, close to the Guaíba River, whose water level on Thursday reached 2.46 meters and worried the authorities, did not suffer any type of setback due to the strong winds and rain that have been reaching the South region.

“The forestry operation was also not directly affected by the strong winds, but there are records of some access to forestry areas being blocked by water,” he added in a note.

The number of deaths and missing people as a result of the passage of an extratropical cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul at the beginning of the week now totals 41 and 46, respectively, according to the most recent data from the State government. In total, 87 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), announced 1 billion reais in financing operations by Banrisul (BVMF:) and 20 million reais by the Department of Health for the affected regions.

CMPC added in a statement that its operation directed water trucks to the municipalities of Lajeado and Estrela to help with cleaning and local reconstruction.

The CMPC group has 44 industrial plants in Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay. The company began operations in Brazil in 2009, when it acquired the Guaíba industrial unit, in Rio Grande do Sul.
