Punjab Declares Era of ‘Fear and Manipulation’ Over, Launches New Gangster Crackdown

A sweeping victory in local elections has emboldened the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to promise a new era of clean governance and a relentless fight against organized crime.

  • The AAP claims over 70 percent of seats in recent Panchayat elections signal a decisive rejection of past political tactics.
  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann pledged to appear before the Sri Akal Takht Sahib with full transparency, even amidst a presidential visit.
  • A new, large-scale operation targeting gangsters, mirroring a previous anti-drug campaign, is set to launch across Punjab.
  • Leaders emphasized a commitment to honest governance, contrasting it with alleged corruption and coercion under previous administrations.

Punjab has decisively broken from an era defined by fear, intimidation, and manipulated elections, according to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders. The assertion came during a meeting with newly elected Zila Parishad and Block Samiti members, where the party announced a full-scale war against gangsters, modeled after its ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ (War Against Drugs) campaign.

A Mandate for Change?

Citing the AAP’s victory in over 70 percent of Panchayat poll seats, party leaders framed the results as a mandate for clean politics and honest governance. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that Punjab witnessed the cleanest local body elections in its history, with no reported instances of vote manipulation. He also underscored that pro-people policies had compelled traditional parties to reassess their platforms.

What steps is the Punjab government taking to address concerns about political interference in elections? The AAP leadership points to the recent local body elections as evidence of a shift, highlighting numerous races decided by margins of fewer than 100 votes, with over 350 won by the opposition – even by a single vote.

Addressing the Sri Akal Takht Sahib

Chief Minister Mann addressed a sensitive matter concerning the Sri Akal Takht Sahib, stating he would appear before the religious authority with all relevant facts. He requested that the proceedings be broadcast live on all channels, emphasizing his intention to appear not as Chief Minister, but as a devout Sikh. “Sri Akal Takht Sahib is sacred for every Sikh and is the highest temporal seat of our community,” he said. He affirmed his commitment to attending despite a concurrent visit by the President of India to Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar.

Mann unequivocally asserted that the Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds the highest importance for him. “Any order received from there will be obeyed in true letter and spirit. The command of Sri Akal Takht Sahib was, is and will always remain supreme for me and my family. It is a highly revered place from where Sikhs derive divine peace and strength,” he added.

A New Approach to Politics

Speaking to the elected representatives in Ludhiana, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal congratulated them on their election victories. He emphasized the significance of the AAP winning more than 70 percent of the total seats, calling it a matter of pride.

Kejriwal contrasted the current election environment with the past, recalling how Panchayat elections were historically marred by force and manipulation. He cited examples from 2013 and 2018, alleging rampant booth capturing, intimidation, and coercion.

“Today, after four years of our government, elections for Block Committees and District Councils were held and not even the slightest coercion was done,” Kejriwal stated. He pointed to the close margins of victory – over 600 seats decided by less than 100 votes, with more than 350 going to the opposition – as proof of a fair process.

Kejriwal asserted that the AAP deliberately refrained from misusing its power, even when it would have been easy to influence results. “We did not come into politics for this. The AAP was not formed to do coercion, corruption or goondaism,” he said, drawing a clear distinction between his party and its rivals.

Tackling Deep-Rooted Issues

Kejriwal addressed the issue of drug trafficking, alleging that previous administrations allowed the problem to flourish, with individuals connected to ruling parties involved in the trade. He stated that the AAP government has taken a firm stance, even arresting prominent figures previously considered untouchable. The government has now launched the second phase of ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’, urging citizens to reject parties that could allow the drug trade to return.

He highlighted the government’s financial turnaround, noting that salaries are now paid on time, a stark contrast to the past when Punjab was burdened with debt. He also pointed to the provision of free electricity, with many residents now receiving zero-cost bills.

Kejriwal emphasized that the 38 percent vote share the AAP currently holds represents a vote for honesty and decency, not coercion or corruption. He challenged the newly elected representatives to increase that share to 45 percent in the next election, urging them to engage with the public with humility and dedication.

A Party of Ordinary People

Kejriwal stressed the AAP’s commitment to representing ordinary citizens, noting that Chief Minister Mann and himself come from non-political backgrounds. He encouraged the newly elected representatives, the majority of whom also lack a political lineage, to prioritize service over personal gain. He warned against complacency, stating that the party is aware of who is working diligently and who is not.

He recalled a time when Punjab lived in fear under previous administrations, with false cases and intimidation being commonplace. He asserted that the AAP has ended that atmosphere, successfully curbing incidents of brutality against the Dalit community.

Looking ahead, Kejriwal announced a major campaign against gangsters, mirroring the approach taken with the anti-drug initiative. He vowed to eliminate all gangster networks in Punjab, leaving no one spared.

Infrastructure and Employment

Kejriwal highlighted infrastructure improvements, including the construction of 19,000 kilometers of village roads, with 42,000 kilometers currently underway. He also mentioned the launch of pilgrimage tours, with buses transporting residents to religious sites like Darbar Sahib and Durgiana Temple.

He celebrated the creation of 60,000 government jobs, emphasizing that these positions were filled based on merit, without bribery or recommendations. He noted that protests by teachers and employees, once a common sight, have disappeared.

Senior AAP leader and Punjab Prabhari Manish Sisodia assured the newly elected members of full government support for rural development, emphasizing the importance of preparing health cards for all families.
