After meeting with the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, at the Finance headquarters, Haddad was questioned by journalists about the BC statement the day before that reinforced the importance of firmly pursuing fiscal targets.

“Pursuing the fiscal target, as the statement says, is an important thing, because it demonstrates the country’s seriousness with public accounts,” said the minister upon leaving the ministry.

“With the support of Congress, I am sure that we will continue to move forward in the right direction of not approving new expenses, not approving new exemptions and doing what needs to be done to correct the tax distortions that Brazil has accumulated over the last few years”, he added.

Haddad said that Brazil’s macroeconomic situation is currently less negative than that of other countries, especially in the fiscal area.

On Wednesday, the Copom repeated its move from August and cut the Selic rate again by 0.50 percentage points to 12.75% per year.
