President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of trying to hit Russia’s Kursk nuclear power plant in an attack last night and added that Moscow had informed the UN nuclear safety agency about the situation, Reuters reported.

Putin, who did not provide further details on the case or provide documentary evidence to support his claim, said this at a briefing with high-ranking officials on the situation in the border areas.

“The adversary tried to strike the nuclear power plant last night. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been notified, from there they promised to come and send specialists to assess the situation. I hope this will really be done by them.” Putin said, quoted by TASS.

So far, there is no comment from Ukraine.

On August 6, Kiev launched a surprise invasion of Russia’s western borders involving thousands of troops. Moscow was clearly caught off guard, and the invasion was the largest by a foreign power against Russia since World War II, Reuters noted.

At the meeting with Putin, which took place in a teleconference format, Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the Kursk region, reported to the president that the situation at the Kursk NPP was stable.

Smirnov added that 133,190 people have left the area or been evacuated.

Another governor, that of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, reported to the president that the border guard forces repelled an attempt by a Ukrainian subversive-intelligence group to infiltrate the region, writes BTA.
