Russians choose Chinese cars because their quality is improving. About it stated Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with China Media Corporation.
The Russian leader noted that Russia and China have “very good prospects” in various industries, including the automotive industry. Putin admitted that the day before the interview he spoke with people whom he considered “car enthusiasts with enormous, long experience.”
“My interlocutors told me: you know, Chinese cars are not just establishing themselves in our market because there are fewer others, not only because the quality is improving. The quality of Chinese cars is improving, so our consumers, especially in terms of price/quality ratio, are happy to focus on the products of Chinese manufacturers,” the president said.
After the departure of foreign manufacturers and importers, the basis of the Russian automobile market is made up of domestic and Chinese brands. Vedomosti previously wrote that sales of new passenger cars in Russia in January–September 2023 increased by 51% year-on-year to 717,310 units. The market leader was “AvtoVAZ” The next five positions were occupied by Chinese brands – Chery, Haval, Geely, Omoda and Exeed. In seventh place was the Korean brand Kia, followed again by the Chinese Changan.
According to the Federal Customs Service, since the beginning of the year, imports of cars from China to Russia have increased more than five times compared to 2022 and amounted to 400,000 units. This is 97% of all imported passenger cars.
