Russian President Vladimir Putin personally called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and apologized for the recent Azerbaijani passenger plane crash in Kazakhstan.
According to the Kremlin on the 28th (local time), President Putin apologized for the tragic incident in a phone call with President Aliyev, expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families, and prayed for a speedy recovery for the victims.
Previously, on the 25th, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane departing from Gaydar Aliyev Airport crashed while landing at Aktau Airport in western Kazakhstan. It was confirmed that 38 out of 67 passengers were killed in the accident.
At the time, the airliner heading to Grozny, Russia, suddenly changed course, crossed to the east of the Caspian Sea, and crashed while attempting to land at Aktau Airport.
At the beginning of the crash, the possibility of a flock of birds collision was raised, as reported by Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency. However, on the 26th, Azerbaijani authorities announced the results of a preliminary investigation that the passenger plane crashed due to a Russian anti-aircraft missile.
In this regard, the Kremlin effectively admitted responsibility, saying that Russian air defenses were repelling Ukrainian combat drones at the time of the accident.
