As every year, Russian President Vladimir Putin published today (Sunday) a congratulatory letter to the members of the Jewish community in his country ahead of Rosh Hashanah. In the letter, sent to Russia’s chief rabbi Berel Lazar, Putin wished a happy new year and referred to the administration’s relations with the Jewish community.

“To the Jews of Russia. I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, a holiday that marks the beginning of the new year according to the Hebrew calendar,” the letter said. “This holiday directs the religious public to the lofty moral hallmarks, which are at the foundation of all religions – to the values of humanity, charity and mercy – and encourages them to do good deeds.”
