Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his desire to have a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has put forward this proposal to India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Doval is currently in Moscow to attend the NSA level meeting of the BRICS group. During this, he met President Vladimir Putin. Putin had said a few days ago that India, China and Brazil can play the role of mediator in the Russia-Ukraine war. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also given positive signals about India’s role as a mediator. However, India has said that if asked, it is ready to play the role of mediator, but first Russia and Ukraine will have to talk to each other.

In fact, the BRICS summit is going to be held in Kazan city of South West Russia on 22 October. The heads of state of member countries are expected to attend this summit. Prime Minister Modi can also go to the Russian city of Kazan to attend this summit. In such a situation, Putin has expressed his desire to have a bilateral meeting with PM Modi apart from the BRICS summit in Kazan itself. PM Modi went to Russia in early July and met President Putin. During this time, both the leaders also participated in the India-Russia summit. However, this visit of PM Modi was also criticized a lot in Western countries.
Doval met Russian NSA
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in St. Petersburg and discussed a number of issues of mutual interest amid discussions on India’s possible role in ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The Doval-Shoigu meeting took place on Wednesday evening on the sidelines of a conference of national security advisers of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) countries. On the talks between Doval and Shoigu, the Indian Embassy in Russia said that the two sides reviewed the progress in bilateral cooperation and discussed important issues of mutual interest.
Doval has reached Russia after Modi’s Ukraine visit
Doval’s visit to Russia comes two and a half weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile visit to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. In a conversation with Zelensky, Modi had said that both Ukraine and Russia should sit down and talk without wasting time to end the war and India is ready to play an “active role” in restoring peace in the region. The Prime Minister had said that India has been in favor of peace since the beginning of the conflict and he can also personally contribute to a peaceful solution to the crisis.
