President of Russia Vladimir Putin He said that there are 600,000 Russian soldiers in the zone of military operations in Ukraine.

This is almost half of the official number of the entire Russian army and corresponds to the number of contract servicemen in the army.

Putin said in a meeting with the participants of Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine that the mechanism of the Russian army in the war zone requires constant “rooting”.

He stated that “the field of combat operations is large, it covers almost 2 thousand square kilometers and the mechanism is huge.”

45 percent of the Russian army is in Ukraine?

On December 1, Putin signed a decree to increase the full-time staff of the Russian army by 130,000 to 1,320,000.

Thus, it follows from his words that currently 45 percent of the Russian army is in Ukraine.

RFE/RL writes that the real number may be more or less than this, as the army staff is always understaffed.

On the other hand, the number stated by the president does not take into account the 300,000 soldiers who were mobilized by his other decree.
