Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that defines a number of products in the wine industry, in particular, defines the concept of “Cognac of Russia”. The document was published on the official portal of legal information.

The law specifies the specifics of labeling wine products and their retail sale, and also determines the permissible technological methods for processing grapes for its production. According to the document, the name “Cognac of Russia” has the right to be indicated on the label of products made 100% from grapes grown in Russia.

The law also defines the concepts: “autochthonous winemaking”, “native grape variety”, “wine alcohol”, “wine distillate”, “flavored grape-containing drinks”, “grape vodka” and “brandy”, “sparkling pearl wines”.

Earlier, the European Union asked Armenia to abandon the use of the word “cognac” when labeling the drink. On June 10, the government of the republic approved a financial agreement with the EU, according to which the country will receive € 3 million for refusing to use the word. Finally, Armenian alcohol producers will abandon this term from 2043.

Geographically, Cognac is a French city specializing in the production of the drink of the same name. This brand is protected by the EU along with champagne.
