Putin spoke about the principles of healthy conservatism at the heart of Russia’s approaches

In shaping its approaches, Russia will be guided by the ideology of healthy conservatism, the importance of which has grown many times over, said Russian President Vladimir Putin at a plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club. The speech was broadcast by the Russia 24 TV channel.

“I have already said that, in shaping our approaches, we will be guided by the ideology of healthy conservatism … Now, when the world is experiencing a structural breakdown, the importance of reasonable conservatism as the basis of a political course has increased many times over. It is precisely because of the multiplying risks and dangers, the fragility of the reality around us, ”Putin said.

According to him, the conservative approach does not mean “thoughtless guardianship”, fear of change and the game of holding or “being locked in one’s own shell.” According to Putin, moderate conservatism means relying on traditions, preserving and increasing the population, real assessment of oneself and others, precise alignment of the system of priorities, correlation of the necessary and the possible, prudent formulation of goals, the principled rejection of extremism as a method of action.

“And, frankly, for the forthcoming period of world reconstruction, which may last for quite a long time and the final design of which is unknown, moderate conservatism is the most reasonable, in any case, in my opinion, the most reasonable line of conduct. It will inevitably change, of course, but as long as the medical principle – “do no harm” – seems to be the most rational, ”Putin stressed. For Russia, these are lessons from its difficult, at times tragic history, he added.
