On June 23-24, military facilities in Rostov-on-Don, including the headquarters of the Southern Military District, were captured by mercenaries of the “Wagner” PMC. After that, Gerasimov did not appear in public for a long time, which gave rise to various rumors about the fate of the Chief of the General Staff.
At the end of June, many pro-government Telegram channels wrote that General Mikhail Tyaplinsky could replace Gerasimov as the commander of the operation against Ukraine. But later there were reports that, on the contrary, Tyaplinsky fell into disfavor.
The commander of the 58th Army, General Ivan Popov, was also dismissed for criticizing Gerasimov.
