Putin Vows Retaliation Over Ukraine Missile Support, Dismisses US Pressure

Russia will not yield to pressure from the United States or any other nation, and any attack on its territory would trigger a severe and overwhelming response, President Vladimir Putin declared Thursday. The strong statement came amid escalating tensions over potential US support for Ukraine’s long-range missile capabilities and newly imposed sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector.

Putin addressed journalists following reports that the Trump administration had eased restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles supplied by Western allies, as well as comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding domestically produced missiles with a range of 3,000 km (1,900 miles). He reiterated his commitment to “dialogue,” despite the shelving of a planned summit with President Trump on Tuesday, but warned of dire consequences should Ukraine utilize US Tomahawk missiles.

“Dialogue is always better than confrontation or any disputes, and especially war,” Putin stated. “We have always supported the continuation of dialogue.” However, he added, a Russian response to an attack with US Tomahawk missiles would be “very strong, if not overwhelming. Let them think about it.”

The remarks were a direct response to a Wall Street Journal report detailing the shift in US policy. The move allows Ukraine greater flexibility in targeting Russian military assets, potentially escalating the conflict. Zelensky’s announcement of domestically produced long-range missiles further complicates the situation, signaling Ukraine’s growing self-reliance in defense capabilities.

Addressing the recent sanctions imposed by the US on two major Russian oil firms, Putin characterized the measures as an “unfriendly” act. He acknowledged the sanctions “will have certain consequences,” but insisted they would not significantly harm Russia’s economic stability. “Russia’s energy sector feels confident,” he asserted.

Putin framed the sanctions as a deliberate attempt to exert pressure on Moscow. “But no self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever decides anything under pressure,” he emphasized. He further cautioned that disrupting the global energy markets could lead to price increases that would negatively impact the United States, particularly in light of its domestic political considerations.

The escalating rhetoric underscores the fragile state of US-Russia relations and the growing complexities of the conflict in Ukraine. While Putin maintains a willingness to engage in dialogue, his firm stance on retaliation and dismissal of external pressure suggest a deepening entrenchment of positions. The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation looming large.
