Russia’s Belgorod region has been hit by a wave of attacks for two weeks, including what local authorities described as “an invasion attempt.” There are already seven deaths in the last week.

Russian troops fought this Sunday with a Ukrainian sabotage group in a town of one Russian border region with Ukrainewhich for a few weeks has been the object of a wave of attacks.

The “combat” in the region of Belgorod was registered in the town of Novaya Tavolzhanka, in the Shebekino district, Governor Viacheslav Gladkov said in his account on the Telegram messaging network.

“They entered with a sabotage group. Now a fight is taking place in Novaya Tavolzhanka,” he wrote, according to what the Sputnik news agency reported. “I hope they are all destroyed,” the official added.

Earlier, the governor said a Ukrainian artillery strike killed two more people yesterday in Belgorod and brought to seven the total deaths in a week in the regionand asked civilians to evacuate the towns affected by the bombing.

Belgorod suffered an unprecedented wave of attacks in the past two weeks, including a raid by an armed group and what Russia described as an attempted invasion of about 200 soldiers and dozens of Ukrainian tanks, which he was able to repel.

The region had already been targeted sporadic attacks in 2022the first year of the war, but never with the frequency with which they began to happen since last month.

Last week, the governor of the region announced the evacuation of children from Shebekino and another district of the province as they were the most affected by the shelling, and today called for the evacuation of all the inhabitants of the attacked areas.

“I ask the inhabitants of the bombed towns, in particular those of the Shebekino district, to follow the instructions of the authorities and temporarily leave your homes“, he declared.

Gladkov said two more people were killed yesterday in Belgorod in a Ukrainian shelling, bringing the week’s death toll in attacks on the region to seven.

The governor said that shelling hit Shebekino and Volokonovski districts again overnight on Saturday, causing “much damage” but no casualties.

Several Russian towns, located near the border, also were attacked this week.

“If the government doesn’t help us rebuild and give us housing, all the (Shebekino) residents will be homeless,” one of them, Evgeny Klioutshnikov, told the AFP news agency.

The man described his city as a ghost town dotted with bomb craters.
