The central benchmark for PV electricity is the “market price”, which is calculated monthly by OeMAG in arrears from the beginning of the year. It fell every month from 8.14 cents per kWh in January and was only 4.65 cents from April. In principle, any photovoltaic system with a maximum output of 500 kWp can supply its electricity through OeMAG and therefore at this price. Electricity suppliers can pay more or less, but they are also guided by the market. At the end of 2023, over 100,000 PV system operators had market price contracts with OeMAG.
Many PV system owners have already adjusted to much lower feed-in tariffs. The Upper Austrian Energie AG attracted a lot of attention in May because it terminated the current contracts of 20,000 customers and will pay only a fraction of the electricity fed into the grid in the future. While customers were previously guaranteed 15.73 cents, they will only receive a variable price, which was 3.12 cents in April, going forward. Energie AG guarantees at least 2 cents.
The PV industry recommends maximizing your own consumption and seeking an energy community. In energy communities, prices are to be agreed between the members. Higher payments of 10 to 13 cents per kilowatt hour are currently possible because there is a discount on network costs for electricity from energy communities. In the case of community systems on the roofs of apartment buildings, the network costs are completely eliminated.
