Pyeongchang-gun canceled the 2024 New Year’s Olympic bell-ringing event. Pyeongchang-gun and the Pyeongchang Cultural Center decided to cancel the ‘2024 New Year’s Eve Olympic Bell Ringing Ceremony’, which was scheduled to be held from 22:30 on the 31st, in order to participate in the national atmosphere of remembrance following the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.
After news of the accident, the military canceled the entire bell-ringing ceremony, including the scheduled celebration, to express deep condolences to the accident victims and their families.
Pyeongchang County Governor Shim Jae-guk said, “We express our deepest condolences and condolences to the accident victims and their bereaved families due to the unfortunate accident, and we have decided to cancel the event in line with the wishes of Pyeongchang residents that similar accidents will not occur in the future.”
Meanwhile, Pyeongchang-gun announced on the 31st that it had completed the Soksacheon (local river) maintenance work, which began last September, this month with a budget of approximately 400 million won.
This project is to repair sections of the Soksacheon River (local river) in Yongjeon-ri, Yongpyeong-myeon, where facilities (reveints and embankment roads) are inadequately maintained. This project involves repairing the existing revetments constructed with gabions by constructing them with concrete retaining wall blocks.
Through this project, the county is expected to have the effect of improving the living environment in rural areas by ensuring the safety of river slopes and expanding the width of embankment roads to facilitate the passage of vehicles for Yongjeon-ri residents. In addition, it is expected to have the effect of reducing flood damage caused by flooding during the summer rainy season and improving residential conditions for nearby residents.
Oh Hyeon-woong, head of the county construction department, said, “Through this project, we worked to improve the living environment in rural areas by improving transportation convenience for residents near Yongjeon-ri and the production and distribution of agricultural products. “We will continue to carry out river maintenance projects and do our best to create beautiful local rivers to protect the property and lives of residents from disasters caused by heavy rains, etc.,” he said.
