by times news cr

The Winter Sports International Exchange Program athletes are working hard on their summer joint training. Pyeongchang-gun announced that they have been conducting summer joint training for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympic Games since the 5th, promoted by the 2018 Pyeongchang Memorial Foundation and the ‘2024 Winter Sports International Exchange and Athlete Development Program’.

This training has entered its second week and will be held for a total of three weeks until August 25th at the Olympic Sliding Center and the Daegwallyeong Plateau training ground.

This project is a follow-up project to the developing country winter sports athlete training project. Unlike previous years when only developing country winter sports athletes participated, student athletes from Pyeongchang County will participate in joint training to prepare for international competitions.

A total of 16 sliding event athletes from 4 countries (including Thailand, Tunisia, India, and domestic athletes) are participating in this summer joint training, and the team is scheduled to compete in the ’10th National Bobsleigh Skeleton Start Championships’ and ‘Women’s Bobsleigh Korean Cup’ to be held at the Olympic Sliding Center on August 23, the last week of training.

In particular, Thailand’s Agnes Campeoll, the silver medalist in the women’s bobsleigh single-person event at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, will participate in this training.

Agnes Campeoll first encountered bobsleigh through the ‘Developing Countries Winter Sports Athlete Development Project’ run by the 2018 PyeongChang Memorial Foundation from May 2022, and is a naturally talented athlete who won a silver medal in just two years. She is currently focusing on joint training this summer to compete in the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

The Thai men’s four-man bobsleigh team will also participate in summer training with the international winter sports exchange team in PyeongChang, home to Asia’s best Olympic stadium facilities, to acquire professional training programs and high-level skills.

Among the domestic athletes, Sangji Daegwallyeong High School sliding event athletes will participate in the training. The domestic athletes will participate in a youth to adult athlete development program to promote the development of winter sports, and will continue to promote international exchanges and participate in international competitions held in Korea in the future.

In addition, Pyeongchang County and the 2018 Pyeongchang Memorial Foundation are conducting various programs necessary for cultivating the knowledge of domestic athletes, such as English conversation programs and doping education outside of training time, and are also planning to promote Korean language education, Korean Wave cultural experience, and tour programs for foreign athletes.

Pyeongchang County Governor Shim Jae-guk said, “Athletes from various countries are visiting Pyeongchang and focusing on summer training. I hope that this joint training at Asia’s best Olympic stadium facility will be a great help in securing a spot at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.”
