(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 13 – North Korea today opposed the final declaration adopted two days ago in Washington by NATO leaders, labeling it an “illegal document”. The declaration “violates the legitimate rights of independent sovereign states” and “incites a new cold war and military confrontation on a global scale”, according to a statement released by the North Korean Foreign Ministry through the state news agency KCNA. Pyongyang therefore accuses the United States of having “persistently attempted” over the past decade to incorporate pro-American Asian countries into the Alliance, warning that “the US strategy of ‘globalization’ of NATO could lead to the danger of a world war”. The latest summit of the Alliance highlighted the desire to increase cooperation with Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. “We will never ignore or avoid the grave threat looming. Instead, we will fully deter aggression and the threat of war with a stronger level of strategic counteraction and defend peace and security in the region and the rest of the world,” reads the North Korean statement, also cited by Seoul media.
