How did we get here? The question defined our first few minutes at the hotel, whose name we read as the “Hyatt Pyramid View Hotel” in the tour operator’s records. Of course, we were here because of the “Grand Egyptian Museum”. This is a brand new building of gigantic proportions, rising out of the desert sand north of the Pyramids of Giza, and intended to allow a modern display of some of the most important works of art from pharaonic Egypt, including the entire tomb treasure of Tutankhamun, which has never been fully exhibited before.

So we asked the travel company for a place to stay near the pyramids. We were immediately satisfied when we looked at the booking confirmation, as we linked the house to an international hotel chain. After all, we would not arrive in Cairo until late in the evening and would have to go to an office the next day. There were a little more comfort and an American hotel bar with an alcohol license was a pleasant prospect. We didn’t take that with the “Pyramid View” very seriously. You know that. At most, the residents of the Presidential Suite will probably see the top of a pyramid there.
