Indonesian Man Found Dead Inside Giant Python in Southeast Sulawesi

A 63-year-old man was tragically found deceased inside an 8.5-meter-long reticulated python after being attacked and swallowed near his home in Indonesia. The unprecedented incident has prompted warnings to residents about venturing into forested areas alone.

The man, from the province of Southeast Sulawesi, had been reported missing since Friday morning after leaving to tend to his livestock. His body was discovered on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. in Majapahit Village, Batauga Subdistrict, according to Laode Risawal, Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Regional Disaster Management Agency of South Buton.

Search and Discovery

Residents grew concerned when they encountered an unusually large python in the victim’s plantation. Suspecting the snake was struggling with a large meal, they killed it and discovered the man’s body inside. A video circulating online depicts locals carefully dissecting the python to recover the remains, with family members present.

“The victim said goodbye to his family, saying he was going to feed his livestock, but he did not return home,” a local police chief stated, as reported by Metro.

Unprecedented Incident and Rising Concerns

Risawal emphasized the rarity of such an event. “This is the first time a human was eaten by a python in this area,” he said. He further noted a recent increase in python sightings near residential areas. “Recently, pythons have indeed been appearing more frequently in people’s homes and gardens. We have warned residents to be careful when they go into the forest alone for work.”

The victim stood 1.6 meters tall. The incident underscores the potential dangers posed by large pythons, particularly in regions where human settlements border their natural habitats. Authorities are currently assessing the situation and considering additional safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the power and potential threat of wildlife, even in seemingly familiar environments.
