Doha: Qatar has confirmed that 400-500 workers have died during construction work ahead of the Qatar World Cup. This is the first time that Qatar is ready to confirm the number of deaths during construction activities. The official death toll is now much higher than previously reported.
In an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Secretary General of the Qatar Delivery and Legacy Supreme Committee, Hassan Al Tawadi, confirmed the death toll of the workers. When asked by Piers Morgan how many migrant workers do you think have died in the construction of stadiums, metro rail and other infrastructure for the World Cup, Al Tawadi said that between 400 and 500 workers died, but he did not have the exact figures.

According to the official figures, three people died in workplace accidents and 37 people died in unexpected events like heart attacks. But Al Tawadi said in the interview that 400-500 people died during the construction of the stadium alone. Tawadi clarifies in the interview that whether it is one death or more deaths, it is still death. In 2010 FIFA granted Qatar the World Cup hosting.
