Qatar in research to boost tomato production

Doha: Research project to find new ways to increase tomato yield. The research project was initiated by Texas A&M University under the Qatar Foundation with financial support from the Qatar National Research Fund.

The research uses facilities at the farms in Alkhor of local company Agrico, a major supporter of Qatar’s food security goals. The research is titled Environmental and Hydroponic Strategies to Enhance Tomato Productivity and Quality.

Researchers will evaluate different tomato genotypes from around the world to see which ones are best suited to Qatar’s harsh environment. Researchers will also study grafting, plant density, pest control, and bee-assisted pollination. The objective is to find appropriate solutions to the challenges faced in increasing tomato production.
