Qatar’s Mediation Efforts Key in Brokering Fragile Israel-Hamas Truce
As world leaders thanked Qatar last week for brokering a truce between Israel and Hamas, the Gulf state’s negotiators continued to press the two sides to clarify and strengthen the fragile ceasefire agreement. Sources familiar with the high-stakes talks say that Qatar feared the truce would collapse before it even began, given the loosely worded framework and a lack of agreement on the details of the swap of prisoners and hostages.
The truce and accompanying exchanges were at risk due to a lack of clarity on certain points in the agreement, with discrepancies between Israel and Hamas and misunderstanding of terms, according to insider sources.
