Qatar has released seven of the eight former Indian Navy personnel who were sentenced to death. Their sentences were subsequently commuted to different prison terms, Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

One of India’s highest-ranking diplomats, Vinay Kwatra, said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kept a close eye on developments in the case and has never given up on initiatives that would bring Indian citizens home. The seven Indian nationals arrived in Delhi around noon today.

Kwatra told reporters that Modi will travel to the Qatari capital Doha tomorrow after concluding his two-day visit to the UAE. He pointed out that the trip had been planned for a long time. Delhi continues to work with the Qatari government to ensure the speedy return of the last remaining Indian national in Qatar.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said that India highly appreciates the decision of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who allowed the Indians to be released and go back to India, reports BTA. “The Indian government welcomes the release of the eight Indian nationals working for Dahra Global who were detained in Qatar,” the foreign ministry said.

“Seven out of a total of eight people have returned to India. We appreciate the Chinese Emir’s decision to enable the release and return home of these nationals,” it said in a brief statement.
