The mining company said in a statement that it has donated $2 million to UNICEF and its partners to support its vital work in addressing the challenges of a malnutrition crisis in Madagascar. A great step that will save more lives and bring vital aid to the needy.

According to UNICEF data, nearly half a million children under the age of five are at risk of severe malnutrition in southern Madagascar. With the impact of the humanitarian crisis, local populations are likely to suffer negative repercussions for some time. But these numbers could be much higher in reality.

Rio Tinto’s donation to UNICEF is helping the organization and its frontline partners bring life-saving services to crisis-affected communities, particularly in southern Madagascar who have supported, for example, activities in psychosocial support provided by social workers.

QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) Managing Director David-Alexandre Tremblay said, “We want to provide practical assistance to people and communities in the affected area in Madagascar and support the essential work that UNICEF does.”
