The chipmaker Qualcomm and the gaming brand Razer are jointly developing an exceptional product: this is a portable console based on a completely new chipset, with far more advanced capabilities than those of the Nintendo Switch and even the Steam Steam Deck. Valve). However, this console, the Snapdragon G3x Handheld Developer Kit, is a kind of experimental balloon that is not intended for marketing to the general public. If Razer has any intention of turning it into a real commercial product, then the company is not talking about it yet.
The Snapdragon G3x Handheld is of course named after the new chipset, which was developed specifically for non-smartphone mobile gaming devices. It still comes with fifth-generation connection support for network games, however its graphics capabilities are far more advanced than those of phone chipsets, and accordingly also requires a relatively large cooling system better suited for a portable console configuration. Qualcomm promises support for 4K and HDR resolution graphics, and connection to an external monitor via a USB-C input.
The experimental console has a 6.65-inch OLED screen and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a selfie camera with a resolution of 5 megapixels, four speakers and a customized version of the Android operating system. In this version developed by Qualcomm, the operating system is able to automatically convert virtual control controllers that are supposed to appear on the screen, to the existing physical controllers on the sides of the console itself. This way no adjustments are required on the part of the game developers in order to be able to enjoy the full capabilities of the console.
The Snapdragon G3x Handheld will not, as mentioned, be available for purchase in stores yet. Qualcomm will offer it to developers and hardware manufacturers who want to test it as a kind of prototype, with the chip maker expecting that in the coming years the portable console category will become much larger and more competitive today – and its new platform can be at the center of this development.
