With a lucky goal from Rodrygo, Brazil beat Ecuador 1-0 in a poor match that lacked excitement and only served to earn the green and yellow team three points that took them out of a difficult position in the South American Qualifiers. The whistles that greeted the team from Dorival qualified the performance of the local team.
The first half was a monotonous affair, with Brazil monopolising possession of the ball but failing to find depth or balance with their forwards. Galíndez therefore had a quiet night, which was only disturbed by his own mistake, when the goalkeeper tried to come out from the back but took his time and allowed Vinicius to put pressure on him, although luckily for him the rebound went just wide of the post.
Beccacece’s idea of play was simple: accumulate men to hinder the Brazilian attackers, who, without space, were not very creative. The problem was that luck played against him when Rodrygo’s shot did not seem to pose much danger but deflected off Pacho and went in next to the right post of the dislocated Galíndez.
The goal did not change much, although in the last play of the first half, the story could have been changed. Rodríguez took the ball and passed to Caicedo, who was unable to define over Alisson’s body and in the second instance, he shot weakly and allowed Gabriel to clear the ball off the line.
Ecuador’s need and Brazil’s stingy attitude combined to make for an unattractive second half, with lots of inconsequential touches and no excitement in front of goal. Just one run by Vinicius, who tried to avoid Galíndez but was left without an angle and shot wide.
The minutes passed without anything happening: Ecuador had the ball without knowing what to do, while Brazil waited for time to run out to add three points and nothing more. The whistles of the fans at the end were a faithful reflection of what happened on the field.
