Queen Máxima is visiting the Princess Máxima Center on the occasion of its fifth anniversary

Queen Máxima will visit the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht on Tuesday 14 February. On 5 June 2023, it will be exactly five years since the research hospital was officially opened by Queen Máxima. From that day on, all children with cancer in the Netherlands are treated in this center and research into childhood cancer is also concentrated in Utrecht. During the working visit, innovation and internationalization of the center are central.

During her visit, Queen Máxima will talk to pediatric oncologists, researchers, data experts and pediatric oncology nurses. They talk about innovations and how they can bring them into the treatment room faster thanks to close cooperation between care and research and international cooperation. These examinations and treatments contribute to the realization of the hospital’s mission: to cure every child with cancer with optimal quality of life. The international patient care of the center is also discussed during the visit.

Also received 63 Ukrainian children

Last year, the Princess Máxima Center received sixty-three Ukrainian children with cancer, who were able to continue their treatments here. The international partnerships play an important role in this.

Courage

Queen Máxima also meets parents and children during her visit. Among others, she speaks with parents whose babies were treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in an international study, in which targeted immunotherapy was added to the treatment protocol. At the end of the working visit, Her Majesty writes the first ‘Heart under the belt’ card on the occasion of World Child Cancer Day on 15 February.
