Since 2020, a vast redevelopment project in the Quimper station district has been launched. A gigantic project which will give rise to an ultra-modern multimodal exchange hub, including in particular a huge footbridge spanning the railway tracks and linking two districts of Quimper. Friday January 19 and Saturday January 20, this 198-ton metal “link” will be inaugurated with great fanfare and lots of entertainment.

Attendance at the Quimper railway station has increased considerably in recent years, from 920,000 travelers in 2016 to 1.6 million expected in 2026. An increase which will increase in the months to come, following the removal air flights departing from Quimper airport to Paris. To modernize infrastructure and services that have become obsolete, Quimper Bretagne Ouest, the State, the region, the department of Finistère, the SNCF and the city have joined forces to transform this district and develop a multimodal exchange hub.

Total cost: nearly 33 million euros, half of which is borne by the city. The work began in November 2020 and should be completely completed in 2025. One of the flagships of this very large project is undoubtedly the footbridge which will span the railway tracks, providing the north-south connection and benefiting from a panoramic view. on the city and in particular on the Saint-Corentin cathedral. A real viewpoint over the city.

With a length of 86 m and a weight of 198 tonnes, it has a metal frame, stairs and four elevators allowing access to people with reduced mobility and people with bicycles. All for 8,676,000 euros. The installation of the footbridge, carried out on the night of November 13, 2022, required the intervention of a 600-ton crane, under the eye of several hundred spectators. The inauguration scheduled for this Friday January 19 and Saturday January 20 should keep all its promises.

Free

From this Friday at 5 p.m., the public will finally be able to tread the steps of the structure’s monumental staircases and immortalize the panoramic view from the top of the footbridge. Saturday January 20, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the station square, an immersive sound walk in the station area is offered, following in the footsteps of the writer Erwan Perec. The opportunity to hear the voices of the neighborhood’s characters who make it unique.

This event for the general public is free. All you need is a charged smartphone, the headphones are provided. For those who have brought helmets and boots, they will be able to visit behind the scenes of the construction site. An unusual visit, open to everyone aged 10 and over, upon registration at [email protected]. The first departure is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The last phase of the project will end with the redevelopment of the station building, with work expected to end at the end of the year.
