Most people know that smoking is harmful to their health. But that doesn’t make quitting any easier. There is another incentive for smokers in May.

The federal government’s drug commissioner, Burkhard Blienert (SPD), has warned of the dangers of smoking and promoted the nationwide “Smoke-free in May” campaign. “Nicotine is a very powerful addictive substance and smoking is extremely unhealthy,” explained Blienert in a statement.

Largest preventable cancer risk factor

Many people find quitting “understandably very difficult.” This makes it all the more important to “never give up and always try to get away from cigarettes, e-cigarettes and the like.”

The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) and the German Cancer Aid want to encourage smokers to live a nicotine-free life through the anti-smoking campaign. “Smoking is the largest preventable cancer risk factor and the main risk factor for lung cancer,” explained Gerd Nettekoven, CEO of the German Cancer Aid Foundation.

Win money by quitting smoking

“Stopping smoking is a benefit for your health,” emphasized Johannes Nießen, acting head of the BZgA. “Anyone who takes part in the nationwide smoke-free month in May and remains smoke-free will notice improved lung function after a short time.” One year after quitting smoking, the risk of coronary heart disease drops significantly.

Smokers can register for the campaign from now until the end of April. All participants should be supported with tips and information via email or messenger services during the campaign period. “Anyone who stays smoke or vape free by the end of the month has the chance to win a cash prize of up to 1,000 euros,” write the initiators.
