Options that doctors have when leaving the university
First of all, it should be made clear that no one is forced to become a specialist. The worst that can happen is to minimize or belittle the work of general practitioners because in reality their role is the foundation of the entire field of health.

However, in the case of those who want to be specialists in Mexico, then it is mandatory to present and pass the National Exam for Applicants for Medical Residency (ENARM). It is not an easy task because currently only 40% of applicants get a place.
R1 syndrome, a stage experienced by all residents?
Regarding this topic, the Spanish resident @cirujanna, who is currently R5 of Thoracic Surgery, published a video in which she explains the phenomenon that she describes as the R1 syndrome. Listening to his explanation, it is an aspect that also applies perfectly in Mexico.
What it mentions is that the first day of the start of the residency you can see the young people full of energy and enthusiasm. Everyone is excited because they achieved a professional goal that cost them a lot of effort.
Based on the above, their first reaction is to ask their elders to provide them with books and studies to read and delve into the specialty. The intention is noble but the problem is that they want to acquire an enormous amount of knowledge in record time. Even if the provision exists, it is an impossible goal.
Likewise, life inside the residence hall is completely different from what it was like in college. It’s not just about the pace of work, but also about the duration of the shifts. There is no way to compare one stage with another.
With this in mind, young people suffering from R1 syndrome they develop a sense of frustration because they can’t make progress at the rate they would like. Having said all of the above, enthusiasm is a positive aspect, but it must be remembered that before learning to run, it is necessary to know how to walk.
