During the inaugural session of this conference, organized by the “P4C” Network in cooperation with the Energy Security and Climate Change in the Middle East and North Africa (REMENA) program of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, under the theme “s “Uniting for Climate Action in the MENA Region”, speakers highlighted the pressing need to promote water and food security, while emphasizing the challenge of drought and water scarcity facing vast regions across the world.

The president of the P4C Network, Ibtissame Azzaoui, noted that climate change, the greatest existential challenge facing the world, “has not until now been treated with the effectiveness required to slow down and mitigate its effects” , believing that faced with this challenge it is necessary to promote “the union and consolidation of efforts on an international and regional scale”.

Ms. Azzaoui pointed out that “the climate crisis must be at the heart of public policies and general consciousness”, calling for “thinking about new ways of life, resilience and adaptation to the culture of scarcity, by initiating and by implementing sustainable operational and scientific solutions, development plans, economic models and new paradigms.”

“Drought is in no way a circumstantial issue, but rather a structural one, a fact that pushes public policies to move from supply management based on the hypothesis of water abundance to management of demand, where the response is rather based on what is available.

The regional director of the REMENA program, Veronika Ertl, for her part called for interaction with questions relating to climate change, ensuring, among other things, the development of climate policies likely to provide answers to the various challenges.

Ms. Ertl also underlined the importance of this conference which will allow parliamentarians to examine questions of the environment and sustainable development, but also to share best practices in climate matters, highlighting the role played by the P4C Network in supporting the efforts of parliamentarians in the region.

For his part, the representative of the German Embassy in the Kingdom, Stefan Bantle, welcomed “the close cooperation with Morocco, particularly in the field of energy efficiency”, affirming that his country will work to strengthen its support for Kingdom in order to achieve an efficient energy transition.

Addressing the challenges to be met in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing efficient climate policies, Mr. Bantle emphasized the need to engage in an economic and energy transition aimed at making face the risks linked to climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The Member of the House of Representatives, Nadia Bouaida, reviewed the legal arsenal as well as the policies and programs put in place by the Kingdom in the field of the environment, citing in this regard the National Climate Plan (PCN) 2020-2030 intended to improve Morocco’s ranking in the Environmental Performance Index (EPI).

Furthermore, Ms. Bouaida warned of the effects of drought on economic performance in general, noting that in such a context, the situation of women should be taken into account in the development of programs to combat climate change. and environmental protection.

The Director of Climate Change, Biodiversity and the Green Economy at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Bouzekri Razi, for his part indicated that the MENA region is one of the areas most affected by global warming. climate, the harmful effects of which are rising temperatures, drought and scarcity of water resources among others.

To remedy this situation, Mr. Razi called for the mobilization of all stakeholders at the levels of parliaments and decision-making circles to implement climate policies, while advocating for effective and flexible solutions to the challenges. climatic.

After welcoming the key role of MPs in parliamentary diplomacy to build bridges between different countries and promote sustainable development, Mr. Razi insisted on the importance of consolidating the foundations of social justice and promoting active cooperation. focused on achieving an efficient energy transition.

This regional conference, attended by Arab parliamentarians, eminent experts, researchers and civil society actors, will be marked by the launch of the MENA section of P4C, an international network committed to environmental sustainability and of climate resilience.
