Speaking at the opening of the work of the Ministerial Segment of this high-level Conference, Ms. J. Mohammed noted that this meeting is an opportunity to make the voice of middle-income countries heard, by shedding light on their potential. and the opportunities they abound.
“MICs, which represent nearly a third of global GDP, are the main drivers of global growth,” she said, adding that each of them faces unique challenges that require innovative solutions.
Indeed, traditional measures of success do not effectively capture the diversity of experiences and development contexts in middle-income countries, said the UN official. The nuanced challenges these countries face require tailored solutions, which are based on three pillars, she added.
The first step is to finance development in the PRI to meet their needs in this area, said Ms. J. Mohammed.
There is also talk of reforming the international financial architecture to allow them to fully express their points of view and reflect their true economic weight, she continued.
The third pillar, she said, concerns the integration of measures of progress in sustainable development that go beyond GDP, which remains a development measure with little regard for equality, resilience or sustainability and that downplays the diversity found in middle-income countries and the significant challenges they face.
In a world marked by a succession of crises, flexibility, innovation, creativity and solidarity are the only path to a sustainable future, not only for the PRI, but also for the global community, assured the vice-president. UN Secretary General.
Placed under the theme “Solutions to the development challenges of middle-income countries in a changing world”, the High-Level Ministerial Conference on the PRI is part of the presidency of the Kingdom of Morocco of the Group of Friends of the PRI within the framework of the United Nations, which it has ensured since 2023 and in the continuity of its advocacy in favor of the interests of developing countries, under the far-sighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in favor of active and united multilateralism .
