Joseph Scaglione, 74, was attacked by the otter after he had finished feeding corn to ducks at a nearby pond. Scaglione recounted the terrifying encounter, stating that all the birds suddenly flew away, causing him to become alert. As he glanced back down, he noticed a brown head sticking up over the bank of the pond and realized it was an otter.
“I backed up along the fence but when I started to close the gate, it charged, immediately attacking my legs,” Scaglione told WPBF. The otter then bit his hands, causing severe injuries including ripping off a nail on his pinkie. With great effort, Scaglione managed to toss the otter away and reach safety.
Unfortunately, the otter continued its rampage. Later that day, it attacked a couple’s dog, prompting them to contact Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for assistance. Animal control arrived at the scene and trapped the otter under a recycling bin in a residential driveway.
Using caution, the officer eventually captured the otter using a net. Subsequently, the animal was transferred to a carrier for further evaluation. Florida Health confirmed that the otter was sent in for a rabies test, which eventually came back positive.
As a result of the otter’s attack, Scaglione has been receiving treatment for rabies exposure and plans to visit a hand surgeon to assess any potential permanent damage.
