Rabies Alert Issued in Sanford Area of Seminole County

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Health in Seminole County has issued a rabies alert for a portion of the Sanford area after a rabid bat was discovered recently.

The alert serves as a reminder to Seminole County residents that wild animals are always at risk for carrying rabies, which can potentially spread to unvaccinated pets. In a press release, the Department of Health strongly advised residents to vaccinate their pets against rabies and to avoid unfamiliar or wild animals.

The rabies alert will remain active for 60 days, during which time Seminole County residents are urged to be especially vigilant about sightings of bats. If anyone comes into contact with a bat, they are encouraged to contact animal control immediately.

Rabies is a serious and potentially deadly disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is most commonly transmitted through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Early symptoms in humans include fever, headache, and fatigue, which can later progress to neurological symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, and paralysis.

To protect themselves and their pets, Seminole County residents are urged to follow the guidelines set by the Department of Health. Vaccinating pets against rabies is not only essential for their well-being but also helps in preventing the spread of the disease.
