The Indonesian Ministry of Health announced that there have been 11 deaths from rabies. 95% of rabies cases are caused by dog ​​bites.

There are currently 26 provinces where rabies is endemic but only 11 provinces that are rabies-free:

  • Riau Islands
  • Bangka Belitung
  • DKI Jakarta
  • Central Java
  • In Yogyakarta
  • Ost-Java
  • West Papua
  • Papua
  • SD-Papua
  • Zentral-Papua
  • Highlands of Papua

In addition, there are many rabies-free islands in Indonesia, for example, in Nusa Tenggara Timor (NTT) there are rabies-free islands like Sumba Island. There are also other rabies-free islands including Tabuan Island and Pisang Island in Lampung, Meranti Island in Riau, Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, Sintaro Islands in South Sulawesi, Nunukan Island, Batik Island and Tarakan Island in North Kalimantan.

There were two districts that reported exceptionally high incidences of rabies (KLB):

  • District Sikka, NTT
  • South-Central Timor District (TTS)

In order for us to eradicate rabies in humans, the most important intervention is to vaccinate dogs.
